Linked objects inserted in single file, cause meltdown!

Ofver the last couple of weeks trying to insert another powerpoint file as a linked object closes PP and get Microsoft error message. This has never been a problem in the past and the same error happens on multiple laptops with varied files, so wondering if a recent update is causing this?
