aol and windows mail

Help! Just purchased new computer running Vista. AOL is fine but when I try to send email from Quick books or a Word document it sends me to Windows Mail which then won't let me send an email!!! I've entered my incoming and outgoing server info as per AOL info and it still gives me an 60 sec. error. Frankly I don't want to use Windows Mail, why can't I just send via AOL??????
